AI Slop Has No Soul: AI in Comic Books

If you’ve been following the Invader journey since the beginning, you won’t need to hear this, but we want to be clear.

Invader will not be using AI for interior art.

Invader will not be using AI for covers.

Invader will not be using AI for any writing.

Full stop.

We are here to tell stories. Human stories. While the capabilities of artificial intelligence are impressive, and evolving to new highs seemingly every month, that’s simply not what we’re here for.

Comics are a unique medium. There is no artistic outlet that is so inherently, intrinsically, and necessarily collaborative, and the process of creating them depends on HUMAN creativity and execution.

And this isn’t just a sentiment coming from the depths of the world of independent comics. Marvel and DC, the biggest publishers of them all, have both come out with strong stances against AI with Jim Lee saying “Not now. Not ever,” to express that they will not be supporting any artificially generated art or stories.

The human experience in itself is what makes a story compelling and worthy of being read by the people who chose to indulge their senses in our comics. Art is intended to help us share our experiences as we maneuver through this unhinged world. It allows us to create rebellious visions from our wild imaginations, express pain and hope with authentic thoughts, create stories from our larger than life dreams, and share the trials, tribulations, joys, and pains that we go through on a daily basis as artists. This is how we choose to connect with the world and will do so while remaining real and respecting our readers.

This subject is by no means only a blog here. The very talent Jimmie Robinson wove a masterful tale about humans taking the power back from AI in his wonderfully written and self illustrated series ARTillery which you can order right here on the Invader site. The series itself follows Mona Lisa brought to life so she can use her influence to form a team of artists to steal the gateway of creativity back from the AI.

Three artists are given magical abilities that transform their art into weapons: a graffiti artist, a film FX artist, and a comic book artist. Together they plan an elaborate heist to save the last gateway of creativity.

To the writers and artists: If you use AI to create your books, do not submit them.

To our readers: Know that every single one of our books were made by and through human experiences, human thoughts, human hands.

With that said -

And yes, this is a shirt (stickers too) that you can purchase from us right here on the Invader site to show that you support keeping AI away from the incredible world of comics as we all know it to be today.
